Cholera Outbreak Claims 11 Lives in Nigeria’s Ebonyi State

A devastating cholera outbreak has claimed the lives of 11 people, including a nursing mother who left behind a 9-month-old baby, in Ndibokote village of Ezza Inyimagu in Izzi Local Government Area, Ebonyi State, Nigeria. The outbreak, which began on September 23, 2024, has also affected 20 others who are currently receiving treatment.

According to Dr. Moses Ekuma, the Hon. Commissioner for Health, the rapid response team has established three treatment centers in the area to combat the spread of the disease. Ekuma advised residents to take precautionary measures, such as rushing to emergency treatment centers if they experience symptoms of diarrhea and vomiting.

The outbreak is believed to have been triggered by a suspected case from a woman who was buried, as well as open defecation and poor hygiene practices in the community. Residents get their drinking water from streams, which has contributed to the spread of the disease.

Dr. Hyacinth Ebenyi, Director of Public Health, attributed the outbreak to the woman’s suspected case, saying that open defecation and poor hygiene practices in the community also played a significant role.

Elder Stephen Nwankpuma, a stakeholder in the community, commended the State Government for its quick intervention after receiving a distress call. However, some community members alleged that they were unable to receive a prompt response from local government officials, which may have contributed to the high number of deaths.

The Medical Expert praised the efforts of development partners like WHO and UNICEF for their support in responding to the outbreak. Community Health Workers, including Mr. Maduabuchi Nwokpuru, owner of God’s Healing Clinic, worked tirelessly to save the lives of those affected.

The outbreak serves as a stark reminder of the importance of proper hygiene practices, access to clean water, and timely medical response in preventing the spread of diseases. As the situation continues to unfold, it is crucial that local authorities and development partners work together to contain the outbreak and prevent further loss of life.
