Federal Roads to be Tolls after Renovation
The government of Nigeria has announced that major roads across the country will be tolled following the completion of construction and renovation. This decision, revealed by Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, is expected to generate substantial revenue for the Federal Government.
According to Umahi, the tolling plan is already underway, starting with the Keffi-Makurdi Road, which has been recently completed. The minister, who was speaking at a press briefing in Abuja to mark Nigeria’s 64th independence anniversary, stated that the government has also been engaging with private sector members to bring in funds to construct and maintain these roads.
Umahi listed the major roads that will be tolled, including the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Second Niger Bridge, Abuja-Kano Road, and Makurdi-9th Mile road. He emphasized that these roads will not only provide an additional source of revenue for the government but also improve public safety and confidence in traveling.
The minister explained that the tolling system aims to bring in funds through private sector investment, alongside the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission and the Ministry of Works. He also reiterated the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability in utilizing the revenue generated from road tolls.
Umahi acknowledged that the administration under President Bola Tinubu has been handling road development more professionally, unlike before. He added that they inherited a total of 300 damaged roads and bridges and plan to commence major road constructions across the country from October 1, 2024.
Under this new plan, users will be able to use digital payment methods, further simplifying the toll-collection process. The government envisions a safer and more reliable road network, paving the way for increased productivity, economic growth, and social development.
The bold decision to toll major federal roads is expected to play a significant role in the long-term development of Nigeria’s road network, ensuring a consistent and reliable source of funds for maintenance and expansion while enhancing the overall travel experience for citizens and visitors.
