Nigeria Secures $600,000 Relief Fund and Gates Foundation Support

The Nigerian government has secured a significant relief fund and commitments from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to support its efforts in addressing the devastating floods and reforming the health and agricultural sectors. The announcement was made on the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly in New York, where Vice President Kashim Shettima met with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

The relief fund, worth $600,000, is intended to hasten relief efforts for victims of the floods, as well as to support health and agricultural sector reforms. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation also pledged an additional $5 million grant to develop the agricultural economics of industrial cassava, with a focus on scaling up drought-tolerant maize production and advancing the Nigeria Cassava Investment Accelerator programme.

In a statement, Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Communications, Stanley Nkwocha, revealed that the relief fund is part of the government’s efforts to build greater resilience in preventing and responding to natural disasters nationwide, especially floods. The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr Wale Edun, announced the establishment of a Disaster Relief Fund, which will pool funds from a broad spectrum of public and private sector players and international donors.

Vice President Shettima reaffirmed the commitment of the administration of President Bola Tinubu to placing health, nutrition, and agricultural development at the forefront of the nation’s national agenda. He emphasized the government’s dedication to integrity and effective leadership in tackling these issues, particularly the significant malnutrition crisis.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, through its President of the Global Development Programme, Dr Christopher Elias, expressed its commitment to supporting Nigeria in times of crisis. The Foundation also pledged support for Nigeria’s health sector reforms, particularly in the fight against polio.

The partnership between the Nigerian government and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is expected to drive meaningful change and improve the lives of all Nigerians. With the expertise of Nigeria’s ministers and the continued support of partners like the Gates Foundation, the nation remains confident in its ability to drive meaningful change and improve the lives of all Nigerians.
