Fake Video: Ndindi Nyoro’s 2020 Praise for William Ruto, Not Rigathi Gachagua

Falsely Claimed Support: Influential Kenyan MP’s Video and Quote Misinterpreted

A video and quote circulating on social media in Kenya have been falsely attributed to influential ruling party politician Ndindi Nyoro, claiming he backs Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. However, an investigation reveals that the video is from 2020, and Nyoro was addressing then Deputy President William Ruto, now President of Kenya.

Nyoro, a key ally of President Ruto and a prominent member of the ruling United Democratic Alliance, has been making political moves that position him as Ruto’s potential running mate in the 2027 presidential election. The misleading video and quote have been spreading online since mid-September, exploiting the current political tensions between Gachagua and Ruto.

The video, posted on TikTok, shows Nyoro saying, "As we finish, I see all the crooks in Nairobi… deputy president, you are a true man. I aspire to be like you. All the crooks in Nairobi keep plotting against you, but you remain unshaken." The quote has been captioned as Nyoro endorsing Gachagua and warning those planning to impeach him.

However, a reverse image search using the InVid search tool reveals that Nyoro posted a similar video on his verified Facebook page on March 13, 2020, addressing then Deputy President Ruto. The video has resurfaced in 2024, taken out of context, and misinterpreted to create a misleading narrative.

On September 24, Nyoro posted the graphic and screenshot of the video on his Facebook page and X account, calling them "fake." The incident highlights the importance of verifying information before sharing it online, especially in the context of political tensions and misinformation.

The same video and quote can be found on various social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, and other online platforms.
