Nigeria and UAE Inch Closer to Strengthening Aviation Ties Amid Emirates’ Return

Earlier this week, Nigeria took a significant step towards increasing its aviation sector’s international connectivity. A high-level delegation, led by Festus Keyamo, Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, concluded intense negotiations with UAE aviation authorities in Dubai, paving the way for the resumption of Emirates Airlines’ operations to Nigeria. The team’s trip was a defining moment in the countries’ efforts to forge a bilateral air service agreement (BASA).

Keyamo expressed his enthusiasm over the accord, which aims to build a forward-looking partnership. "We are pleased to have secured reciprocal operational rights for Nigerian airlines, solidifying our bilateral ties while strengthening our aviation industry on the global stage," said the Minister.

The revised BASA sets the framework for reciprocal rights, paving the way for Nigerian carriers to start direct flights to the UAE. This enhanced collaboration is expected to catalyze growth in areas such as tourism, commerce, and cultural exchanges, ultimately benefitting both Nigeria and international travelers.

Last week’s negotiations marked an important milestone in the region’s aviation sector, weeks of diplomatic and technical consultation culminated in a favorable outcome for the Federal Government. This new development endorses its commitment to secure the best possible outcomes for both local and international citizens.

With the rescheduled Emirates operations set to relaunch soon, the spotlight is on Nigeria’s ambitions to foster greater connectivity while bolstering its aviation presence globally. The country, once lagging behind peer nations in the region, is on an upward curve, its progress driven in part by pragmatic diplomacy efforts like these.
