Election Underway in Anambra State, Despite Initial Delays
Voting has begun in some polling units across Anambra State, Nigeria, as part of the ongoing local government election. However, the process has not been without its challenges, with some areas still awaiting the arrival of officials and materials.
At Amikwo Ward 6 in Awka South Local Government Area, voting was underway when our correspondent arrived. Despite the absence of security agencies and voting cubicles, the atmosphere remained calm. Presiding officer Obikwere Joy reported that a total of 1,883 persons were captured in the voters’ register, with voting commencing at around 10 am.
Residents who cast their ballots expressed satisfaction with the exercise, with one voter, Mr. Ebuka Nna, stating, “We’re happy with the voting process. At least, no sign of violence has been recorded.” The absence of security agencies and voting cubicles did not deter voters, who turned out in large numbers to exercise their democratic right.
In contrast, Odoagba Ward 11, Polling Unit One, witnessed a slow start, with only two voters waiting under a canopy. The ad hoc staff of the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) were yet to arrive, causing a delay in the voting process.
Despite these initial delays, the election has proceeded relatively smoothly, with voters optimistic about the outcome. As the day unfolds, it remains to be seen whether the remaining polling units will experience similar challenges or whether the election will conclude without major issues.
