Four Nigerian Professors Chosen to Lead Key Positions in University of Applied Science in The Gambia
Abuja, Nigeria – The Nigerian Technical Aid Corps (NTAC) has announced that four Nigerian professors have been selected to hold key positions in the University of Applied Science, Engineering and Technology (USET) in The Gambia. The development was confirmed by the director-general of NTAC, Yusuf Yakub, during a courtesy visit by the Minister of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology of The Gambia, Gomez Pierre, in Abuja.
The four professors were chosen for their professional prowess and are set to assume their roles following the impending end of the tenure of the current Vice-Chancellor of USET, Prof. Samuel Owusu-Ofori, on September 30. The appointed professors will hold the positions of Vice-Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Director of Research and Grants, and Director of Academic Planning and Quality Assurance.
According to NTAC’s director-general, the professional expertise of the four volunteer professors led to the setting up of a task force by the university’s governing council. The task force was established to validate the current serving TAC volunteers in The Gambia to fill vacant positions in the institution and ensure a smooth running of the university. The Gambian ministry requested the endorsement from the Nigerian authorities for their appointment.
The deployment of the TAC volunteers is part of Nigeria’s 24-month TAC scheme aimed at providing technical assistance to The Gambia. The strong partnership between Nigeria and The Gambia in the areas of education and technical cooperation has been strengthened by the move. Notably, The Gambia has been one of the first and highest country-subscribers to the TAC Scheme since its establishment in 1987, having received over 12,000 Nigerian volunteers, including engineers, lawyers, and medical professionals.
The announcement is significant, highlighting the commitment of the two countries to education and technical cooperation. With the selection of these four professors, it is expected that the university will continue to thrive under their leadership and expertise.
