Ogun PDP’s Deputy Governorship Candidate Slams Adebutu’s 2027 Ambition
The deputy governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Ogun State, Adekunle Akinlade, has publicly disavowed the 2027 gubernatorial ambition of Ladi Adebutu, a fellow party leader. The announcement comes despite Adebutu’s ambiguous stance on recontesting the position.
Akinlade, who lost the 2023 gubernatorial election to the incumbent, Dapo Abiodun, stated that Adebutu’s bid would not receive the party’s support. "We are aware that Hon. Ladi Adebutu is deploying billions to influence his aspiration at all levels," Akinlade said, "but as stakeholders in Ogun PDP, myself, Hon. Sikirula Ogundele, Otunba Jimi Lawal, Hon. Dimeji Fabiyi, and hundreds of our party leaders across the state have resolved to put Ogun state first."
Akinlade maintained that Adebutu’s attempt to recontest in 2027 is unlikely, citing the governor’s 8-year term that would expire in 2027. "A self-entitled Iperu man will not want to be governor in 2027," Akinlade emphasized, highlighting the need for unity among party leaders.
Akinlade’s statements were made during a post-congress press conference, where he revealed that the party held a parallel state congress on Saturday. This development marks a significant step towards uniting the party, which has been embroiled in internal disputes. Akinlade and other party leaders had earlier clashed over the results of parallel ward and local government congresses, ultimately resulting in a court-ordered reconciliation.
The stakes are high for both Akinlade and Adebutu, as their respective political careers hang in the balance. While Adebutu has yet to formally declare his intention to recontest, Akinlade’s public stance on the matter sets a precedent for future party discussions. The situation remains tense, with many wondering how Adebutu will respond to Akinlade’s declaration.
