Goat Cattle Boosts Poverty Reduction in Angola’s Poorest Municipality

Angola’s Kwenda Program Brings Hope to Poverty-Stricken Curoca Municipality

In a bid to alleviate hunger and poverty, the Kwenda program has distributed 1,687 head of goat cattle to 203 households in Curoca, Cunene province, Angola. The initiative, launched in 2023, aims to promote productive inclusion and reduce the impact of poverty on citizens.

According to Eduardo Silunda, head of the FAS department in Cunene, the program will enable families to create a revolving inclusion fund, which will help them overcome the challenges of poverty. Silunda appealed to the beneficiaries to take good care of the animals, ensuring they procreate and can be delivered to other families, except for the cubs that will continue the Animal Promotion Program.

The Kwenda program, which covers four components – Social Monetary Transfers, Productive Inclusion, Municipalization of Social Action, and Strengthening of the Single Social Registry – has set a target to cover 1,287 families in the municipality of Curoca.

Curoca, with a population of 56,000 inhabitants, is the poorest municipality in Angola, according to the Multidimensional Poverty of the Municipalities of Angola report released in 2019. The report highlights an incidence of 98 percent in all dimensions, indicating the severity of the poverty crisis.

The distribution of goat cattle is a significant step towards addressing the poverty and hunger issues in Curoca. The program’s focus on productive inclusion and social support will undoubtedly bring hope to the residents of this poverty-stricken municipality.
