Nigeria’s New Chief Justice: Tinubu Pledges Independence, Sanction of Judiciary
President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to upholding the independence and sanctity of the judiciary in Nigeria. The President made this pledge while swearing in Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the 23rd Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Justice Kekere-Ekun, the second female CJN in Nigeria’s history, was sworn in following her confirmation by the Senate. The ceremony was witnessed by four former chief justices of the Federation, including the first female Justice, Aloma Mukhtar, and other heads of the judiciary divisions.
Tinubu emphasized the pivotal role of the judiciary in safeguarding Nigeria’s constitutional democracy, stating that it is the last hope of the common man and the moderating force that ensures everyone remains in check. He highlighted the importance of judicial independence, noting that it is crucial for sustaining Nigeria’s constitutional democracy.
The President also reiterated his government’s dedication to improving the welfare and working conditions of judicial officers, as well as enhancing their effectiveness in administering justice. He urged Justice Kekere-Ekun to continue upholding the principles of ethical leadership, fearlessness, and honesty that have defined her career.
In his congratulatory remarks, Tinubu praised Justice Kekere-Ekun’s rise as a testament to hard work and an inspiration to women, particularly young girls, in a male-dominated profession. He congratulated the Nigerian women, emphasizing that any girl child can dream big and have her dreams come true.
Tinubu commended the Senate for expediting the confirmation of the new CJN and thanked members of the judiciary for their continued support. The ceremony was attended by high-ranking government officials, including Sen. Godswill Akpabio, President of the Senate, Tajudeen Abbas, Speaker of the House of Representatives, and former Chief Justices of Nigeria.
With the appointment of Justice Kekere-Ekun, Nigeria’s judiciary has continued to evolve and progress. As the new CJN, she will play a crucial role in shaping the country’s legal landscape and upholding the rule of law.
