Renewed Push for Better Infrastructure: Nigerians Celebrate Roadwork Progress
Nigeria, a country struggling with clogged roads, has sparked hope among citizens with fresh efforts to improve its notoriously bad highway infrastructure. This time, the Petroleum Tanker Drivers Branch (PTD) of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has joined the celebratory chorus. In their latest communique, NUPENG applauded the recently approved 13 road projects across the country, orchestrated by the Federal Executive Council under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The revitalization of federal highways gained momentum after NUPENG’s National Executive Committee held a meeting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State’s capital, over the weekend. The drivers’ concerns about the past administration’s neglect of their demands boiled over, and they spoke out about the devastating repercussions of poor road conditions – accidents, injuries, and fatal losses of members and valuable trucks.
Comrades Augustine Egbon, National Chairman, and Oluchi Chinagorom, National Secretary, co-authored a statement highlighting the union’s satisfaction with the new efforts. They cited the long-overdue focus on infrastructure in the current administration, describing it as “already meeting some of our grievances”.
The PTD-NUPENG emphasized the strategic need for these repairs, referencing the rehabilitation of Enugu-Port Harcourt, Ore-Ondo-Akure Road, 300 km Benin-Akure-Ilesha, and Aba-Owerri and Mubi-Maiduguri road sections. These enhancements will create a smoother supply chain of petroleum products and guarantee seamless transportation for NUPENG members.
A key focus area for NUPENG is the importance of timing in the project’s successful execution. The union expects contractors to get to site promptly and work efficiently with the allocated budget.
The renewed optimism in infrastructure development has NUPENG members looking forward to reaping the benefits of quality roads. Nigerians continue to hold onto hope, knowing that tangible progress indicates a brighter future for commerce, transportation, and road safety.
