Rivers State Governor Insists on Holding Local Government Election Despite Rumors of Disruption
Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has reaffirmed his commitment to holding the forthcoming Local Government Election on October 5th, despite rumors of plans to disrupt the exercise. Fubara made the assurance during an inspection tour of the 12.5km N225.1billion Trans-Kalabari Road project in Rumuolumeni community, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.
The governor urged political parties, candidates, and the electorate to be enthusiastic as they prepare to vote for their preferred candidates who will become the new political leaders at the council level. He emphasized that there is no encumbrance known to law that can stop the conduct of the election.
Fubara’s assurance comes as he has been inundated with rumors of plans by some misguided individuals to disrupt activities at the state Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC). He warned such persons to retrace their steps, stating that the interest of Rivers State is paramount and that it is essential to do the right thing.
The governor also commended the RSIEC for their efforts in ensuring a free and fair election, saying that he is aware that they have already received an order mandating them to conduct the election on October 5th, 2024, and that the security agencies will provide necessary support.
Fubara’s legacy project, the Trans-Kalabari Road, is under construction and will connect the Tombia people to the city. The governor expressed his disappointment with the project’s progress, citing the challenging terrain, but emphasized the importance of completing the project before the end of his tenure.
The governor’s visit to the RSIEC complex was aimed at interacting with the Chairman of the Commission, Justice Adolphus Enebeli, and other principal staff. He reiterated his commitment to ensuring a successful election, saying that it will be one of the best elections ever conducted in the state.
In his address to RSIEC staff, Fubara emphasized the importance of doing the right thing, stating that the interest of Rivers State is paramount and that it is essential to ensure a free and fair election. He warned that any attempt to disrupt the election will not be tolerated and that he will personally intervene if necessary.
