Fubara Calls for Active Participation in Rivers LG Elections

Rivers State Governor Calls for Active Participation in Local Government Elections

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has called on residents to actively participate in the upcoming local government elections, scheduled for October 5, 2024. The elections are seen as a crucial step in reshaping the political landscape of the state. The governor made the call during a visit to the "Simplicity Movement," a political coalition comprised of individuals from diverse political affiliations.

At the Government House in Port Harcourt, Governor Fubara expressed his deep gratitude to the movement, praising their loyalty. He emphasized the importance of the elections, stating that the outcome will determine the direction of the state’s politics for years to come.

"What is structure? Structure is ownership: the one who controls the LGA; the one who controls the resources; the one who gives employment to our local people; and the one who shares the state and the local government resources among its people. And that is what I want this government to stand for (and defend in the interest of the people)," the governor said.

The founder and leader of the Simplicity Movement, Sobomabo Jackreich, explained the reasons behind their show of solidarity, committing to stand by the governor. They expressed their support for the governor’s focus on peace and progress in the state, citing his efforts to promote good governance as an inspiration.

The movement, which inaugurated its new secretariat in Port Harcourt before visiting the government house, aims to foster unity and political stability in the state. The prolonged political challenges in Rivers State have led to the formation of groups like the Simplicity Movement, positioning themselves to support their chosen leaders.

The upcoming election is seen as a critical test for political actors in the state, particularly as Rivers moves toward the 2027 governorship election. The outcome will determine the direction of the state’s politics and the level of stability and development it will experience in the years to come.
