Busan International Film Festival Breaks New Ground with Netflix Production

The 29th Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) will kick off with a milestone event, as a Netflix period war drama produced by South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook will become the first streaming title to open the festival. Titled “Uprising”, the film is directed by Kim Sang-man and stars Korean megastar Gang Dong-won in the lead role. This groundbreaking decision has sparked both excitement and criticism within the Korean cinema community.

“Uprising” is set during Korea’s Joseon Dynasty and tells the story of two friends who grow up together but become enemies when war breaks out. Park was a screenwriter and producer on the project, which has attracted significant attention ahead of its world premiere. Park Do-shin, the festival’s acting director, believes the film has the potential to appeal to the public on a global scale.

Streaming-only content like Netflix’s “Squid Game” and the Apple TV+ series “Pachinko” have played a significant role in the global visibility of Korean and Korean diaspora stories, according to BIFF programmer Jung Han-seok. The Busan 2024 lineup reflects this shift, as streaming content has become an integral part of the culture.

Despite criticism from some in the Korean cinema community, who argue that a streaming title was not the best choice for the festival’s opening film, Park’s involvement has generated widespread interest. The decision marks a significant step forward in the global recognition of South Korean cinema, as streaming platforms continue to shape the way we consume film.

Away from the controversy, BIFF will also honor South Korean actor Lee Sun-kyun, who died last year following a suicide. The festival will screen six of Lee’s works, including the Oscar-winning film “Parasite”. Additionally, Japanese filmmaker Kiyoshi Kurosawa will receive the Asian Filmmaker of the Year award for his contributions to the horror genre.

This year’s festival will also feature over 15 more films than last year, with 86 world premieres showcasing the diversity and talent of Asian filmmakers. The event will also host a conference focused on the integration of AI in content production, an issue currently making waves in Hollywood.

With its cutting-edge programming and global relevance, the 29th Busan International Film Festival is set to be an unforgettable event, breaking new ground in the world of cinema.
