Nigeria Labour Congress Chief Calls for Education Policy Consistency
In a recent event celebrating International Teachers Day, Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), urged the Federal Government to prioritize policy consistency in the education sector. Ajaero’s call comes amid the ongoing HND/BSC dichotomy challenge, which he attributed to policy inconsistencies.
Speaking at the event in Abuja on Friday, organized by the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU), Ajaero emphasized the importance of technical education. He emphasized that HND (Higher National Diploma) should not be removed and tasked the Ministry of Education with developing facilities and ensuring job security. Ajaero also pledged to support COEASU in demanding better welfare for teachers nationwide.
In his address, Ajaero expressed dissatisfaction with the current minimum wage of N40,000 for civil servants, advocating for a wage that covers basic needs. “We need a wage that will help everyone pay their bills,” he said. To achieve this, Ajaero recommended that COEASU collaborate with the Ministry to secure a better budget from the National Assembly.
The NLC boss also appealed to the Ministry to address the concerns raised by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and honour the agreement signed to prevent strikes. His appeal highlights the need for consistent policies and effective communication between stakeholders to ensure the education sector runs smoothly.
The NLC’s call for policy consistency in the education sector is a crucial step towards addressing the ongoing challenges facing the sector. With a focus on technical education and job security, the government can work towards creating a more sustainable and effective education system.
