Reports Surface of Explosive Attack on APC Secretariat in Port Harcourt

Tension has gripped Rivers State after suspected arsonists reportedly detonated explosives at the All Progressives Congress (APC) secretariat in Port Harcourt early on Saturday morning. According to eyewitnesses, the blast damaged the main gate and security house of the secretariat, as well as parts of an adjacent building.

The incident allegedly occurred just hours before a Local Government election in the state, sparking concerns over political tensions in the area. The State caretaker committee chairman of the APC, Chief Tony Okocha, confirmed the attack and accused supporters of Governor Nyesom Wike (Fubara) of being behind the attack.

In a statement, Okocha claimed that “at the wee hours of Saturday, pro-Fubara civilian soldiers detonated dynamites at our office,” and that a second attempt to set the building on fire was foiled after security personnel quickly put out the flames.

The timing and severity of the incident have raised concerns about potential violence and intimidation in the upcoming election. As a peaceful and democratic election season begins, the incident is a stark reminder of the delicate balance between political debate and violent extremism.

Reactions to the attack remain scarce, but it remains a significant development in Rivers State’s political landscape as citizens prepare to head to the polls. The circumstances surrounding the attack will need to be thoroughly investigated, and those responsible held accountable.

The incident is ongoing and will be closely watched by international observers, amid growing concerns about political tension in the region. More updates will be provided as information becomes available.
