Nigerian Elders Urge Support for Constitution Review

A group of respected Nigerian elders has called on the nation’s citizens to support the ongoing Constitution Review being undertaken by the National Assembly. The National Patriotic Elders Forum made the appeal in a communique issued after a meeting in Kano on Saturday.

The forum, led by Ambassador Bature AbdulAziz, emphasized the importance of an "acceptably reviewed Constitution" and urged the Constitution Review Committee to involve Nigerians in the process to ensure its success. The committee is currently deliberating on critical issues affecting the nation, including federalism, state police, and local government autonomy.

The elders believe that it is crucial for citizens to be carried along in the review process to ensure a credible outcome. They also emphasized the need for members of the forum to be involved, citing their robust contributions to the exercise. The forum members urged Nigerians to provide their inputs on issues before the Constitution Review Committee to ensure good representation and a successful exercise.

Furthermore, the elders requested that the committee enlighten citizens on its workings, the issues before it, and the procedures for making their own contributions to the review process. They expressed confidence in the integrity of the committee’s chairman and members, who they believe will do the needful to Nigeria’s constitution.

The National Patriotic Elders Forum’s call to support the Constitution Review comes at a crucial time for Nigeria, as the nation seeks to address its numerous challenges and move forward. The elders’ involvement and endorsement of the review process may help to boost public confidence and encourage greater participation in the exercise.
