Tensions Escalate as Iran Threatens Stronger Response to Israeli Aggression
In a stern warning, Iran’s top diplomat in Damascus on Saturday vowed to respond even more forcefully to any aggression from Israel, as the Jewish state prepares its response to a recent Iranian missile attack.
Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi made the statement in the Syrian capital, where he met with top officials, including President Bashar al-Assad, an ally of Iran. Araghchi emphasized that Iran’s reaction to any attack by Israel would be proportional and similar, but even stronger.
The warning comes after an Israeli military official revealed that the army is preparing a response to the Iranian missile attack, which was deemed “unprecedented and unlawful” by the official.
Araghchi’s visit to Damascus follows a trip to Beirut, where he called for ceasefires in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon. He also expressed support for a truce in Lebanon that is acceptable to Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed militant group.
The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has been ongoing for almost a year, following a Hamas attack on Israel that triggered the war in Gaza. Iran has been a key ally of Hezbollah, and the two have been involved in several military clashes with Israel.
In related news, Israeli air strikes have targeted Hezbollah positions in Lebanon, killing the group’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah. The strikes have also damaged infrastructure and caused civilian casualties.
Assad’s office quoted the Syrian president as saying that Iran’s missile attack on Israel was a “strong response” that taught the “Zionist entity a lesson.” The attack came just days after the Israeli air strike that killed Nasrallah.
The escalating tensions between Iran and Israel have raised concerns about the potential for further violence in the region. The international community is closely watching the situation, hoping for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
