Strengthening Democracy: Akpabio Calls for Free and Fair Elections
In a recent local government election in Akwa Ibom, Nigeria, Senate President Godswill Akpabio cast his vote and emphasized the importance of further strengthening the country’s democracy. Akpabio, who voted at the Ukana Ward 1, Essien Udim Local Government Area of the state on Saturday, hailed the exercise while also questioning how parties consistently secure 100% of votes in elections.
During an interview, Akpabio said, "I said it was necessary for me to come and see how they normally win the 100% with the avalanche of support that you have seen that I have in my senatorial districts and in my local government which you are all witnesses." He expressed curiosity about how parties achieve this feat, noting that it could lead to more competent candidates being chosen in the future.
"If elections are allowed to be free and fair, a lot of political parties will choose people on the basis of their competence and not on the basis of the ruling party in that state," Akpabio stated. He also urged Nigerians to examine their conscience, citing the need for a more transparent and democratic system.
The election, which saw a large turnout of residents, has raised concerns about the legitimacy of the voting process. Akpabio’s comments highlight the importance of free and fair elections in building a strong democracy.
