Nigeria Customs Service Boosts Air Patrol and Surveillance with New Aircraft
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has taken a significant step in enhancing its air patrol and surveillance operations with the acquisition of a Cessna Grand Caravan EX-208B aircraft. The move is aimed at strengthening the service’s efforts to combat smuggling and ensure effective border security.
According to Comptroller-General Adewale Adeniyi, the aircraft, registered as 5N-BAA, is a game-changer for the NCS air wing. Its modern Garmin G 1000 avionics cockpit system enables operations at day, night, and during low visibility conditions. The aircraft can carry ten officers and has a six-hour aerial endurance, significantly enhancing the service’s capacity for air surveillance and border patrol.
The aircraft is powered by the reliable PT6 Pratt and Whitney engine and is globally recognized for its rugged versatility, short-field take-off and landing capabilities, and ability to operate on remote airstrips. Adeniyi emphasized that the aircraft will play a crucial role in air patrols aimed at detecting smuggling routes, deploying armed personnel, and providing swift support for ground operations.
The NCS boss highlighted the aircraft’s cost-efficiency, saying it has a relatively low operational cost compared to other aircraft in its class. He added that the acquisition of the aircraft is a long-term investment for the service, enhancing operational efficiency and contributing to the sustainability of air surveillance programs.
The acquisition is expected to provide significant tactical advantages to the NCS, strengthening border security and sending a clear signal to economic saboteurs that the service is better equipped to combat smuggling activities. The aircraft will serve as a strategic asset for Nigeria Customs Technical and Hangar Services Ltd, offering logistical support and revenue generation to the service.
With this new addition, the NCS is poised to further enhance its air border patrol capabilities, intercept illegal activities, and provide quick extraction support when necessary. The acquisition of the aircraft is a testament to the service’s commitment to ensuring the security and integrity of Nigeria’s borders.
