Kenyan Athlete Kipyegon Bett Dies at 26 Due to Renal and Hepatic Failure

Kipyegon Bett, a rising star in Kenyan athletics, has tragically passed away at the age of 26 due to complications from renal and hepatic failure. The talented middle-distance runner won a bronze medal in the 800m at the 2017 World Championships in London, but his career took a devastating turn in 2018 when he was suspended for doping after testing positive for erythropoietin (EPO).

Bett’s breakthrough came at the 2016 U20 World Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland, where he showcased his exceptional skills and was hailed as one of Kenya’s brightest prospects. However, his impressive early career was marred by a doping scandal that led to a two-year suspension. Despite consistently denying the allegations, Bett faced a significant setback that damaged his reputation and affected his mental health.

After completing his suspension in August 2022, Bett struggled with depression and developed an alcohol addiction, according to his sister. His battle with mental health issues eventually led to his hospitalization last week in his hometown of Kericho, with his condition deteriorating significantly over the weekend.

Kenya has faced a recurring issue with doping in the past few years, despite substantial investments in anti-doping initiatives. The World Anti-Doping Agency has expressed concerns about the effectiveness of these efforts, particularly in light of major cuts to the operational budget of the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (Adak). This year, Adak’s budget was reduced from $2.32 million to just $155,000, sparking alarm about the potential impact on the integrity of Kenyan athletics.

Bett’s untimely death is a tragic reminder of the challenges faced by athletes dealing with mental health issues, addiction, and the risks associated with performance-enhancing substances. As the athletics world mourns the loss of a talented young athlete, it is essential to recognize the need for enhanced support systems and stricter measures to prevent doping in sports.
