Democracy in Nigeria: Minister of Federal Capital Territory Laments Abuse of Principles

Nigeria’s Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has expressed his discontent with the recent conduct of local government elections in Rivers State. Wike believes that the country’s democracy is being derailed, and he feels particularly resentful that some Nigerians have accused him of doing so.

During an interview on Channels TV, Wike argued that the allegations should be directed at the incumbent governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, instead. According to Wike, Fubara’s decision to disregard a court judgement and conduct the election anyway is a blatant disregard for democratic principles.

Wike’s comments came as a response to critics who have accused him of attempting to derail democracy. However, he believes that it is actually Fubara who is guilty of this offense. Wike pointed out that respected figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former President Goodluck Jonathan have also spoken out about the derailment of democracy, and have even praised Fubara for his actions.

Wike’s remarks highlight the ongoing tensions and power struggles in Nigeria’s political landscape. As the country navigates its democratic process, such controversies will undoubtedly continue to arise. It remains to be seen how these developments will shape the future of Nigerian democracy.
