Minister Clarifies Stance on Nigerian Refineries
Nigeria’s Minister of State Petroleum Resources (Oil), Heineken Lokpobiri, has categorically denied directing the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to stop running its refineries and focus solely on equity participation in other refineries. The clarification comes after reports emerged that Engr. Kamoru Busari, Director of Upstream in the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, made the statement on behalf of the minister at an event in Lagos.
In a statement, the minister emphasized that the claim is false and does not represent his position as Minister overseeing the oil sector or the stance of the Federal Government. He highlighted that NNPCL is a company governed under the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA), with a functional board and management, and operates independently like any corporate entity.
The minister reiterated that the oil and gas sector is fully deregulated, and the Nigerian government remains committed to promoting in-country refining. He encouraged companies, including NNPCL, to operate independently, following global best practices, while providing strategic guidance without interfering directly in their operations.
The minister reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the growth and independence of NNPCL, ensuring that its operations align with international standards for efficiency, transparency, and profitability. This clarification aims to clear up any misunderstandings and maintain transparency in the country’s oil and gas sector.
The Nigerian government’s commitment to promoting in-country refining and supporting the growth of NNPCL demonstrates its dedication to the development of the country’s oil and gas sector. The clarification also underscores the importance of transparency and accuracy in communication, particularly in high-stakes industries like energy.
