Elections in Plateau State: Delays Mar Local Government Polls

In Plateau State, Nigeria, the local government elections have gotten off to a slow start, with delays reported in some areas due to the late arrival of officials. Despite the setbacks, voting has begun in some parts of the state, with officials and voting materials in place.

According to a correspondent from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), who visited several polling units in Kugiya, Bukuru Lowcost, and Zang Commercial Secondary School, officials from the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) were yet to arrive at these locations as of 8:45 a.m. However, officials at the Olusegun Obasanjo Model School did arrive on time.

Intending voters were seen waiting patiently at the various polling units, eager to exercise their franchise. Mrs. Sabina Dawam, the official in charge of the school in Hwolshe, attributed the delay to a lack of vehicles at the local government to transport voting materials and officials.

One voter, Mr. Amos Badung, expressed his dissatisfaction over the late arrival of officials at the school’s polling unit, stating that the delay could cause disenfranchisement of some voters. As of 9:00 a.m., the election had yet to commence.

Another voter, Mrs. Mary Dalyop, who had been waiting since 7:30 a.m. at the St Jarlath’s Primary School 1 polling unit in Kugiya, was hesitant to leave the polling station, unsure if she would be able to return to cast her vote if she went home.

Despite the delays, voting has begun early in some areas, including Zawan A and B, Kuru, Du, and Rayfield, all located in Jos South. Both officials and voting materials were present, and voting commenced as early as 8:00 a.m.

The Plateau State local government elections are a significant event in the state, and the delays have caused frustration among voters. However, it remains to be seen how the rest of the day’s proceedings will unfold.
