Cyber Threats Pose Significant Threats to National Security, Warns Nigerian Police
The Nigerian Police Force has sounded a warning about the growing threat of cybercrime in the country. According to the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, cybercriminals are exploiting vulnerabilities in the country’s system and targeting individuals, businesses, and government institutions.
The Inspector General made this statement at the police’s Cybersecurity Week celebration in Abuja, where he highlighted the importance of cybersecurity in the digital age. Egbetokun noted that cyber threats can disrupt critical infrastructure, compromise sensitive information, and undermine the very fabric of society.
The Director of Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre, Uche Henry, also warned that cyber crimes, if not properly addressed, have the potential to cripple systems, disrupt services, and compromise the safety and privacy of citizens. Henry emphasized that cybersecurity is a shared responsibility, and that all stakeholders, including government agencies, law enforcement, private sector partners, and individuals, must come together to share knowledge, expertise, and strategies to counter these growing challenges.
Henry noted that cybercrime knows no borders, and its impact can be felt across all sectors, from finance to healthcare, and from government to individuals. He urged that Nigeria must remain resilient in the face of these threats and continue to foster a secure cyberspace for all its citizens.
The Inspector General and Director of Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre highlighted the need for collective resolve and commitment to confronting cybercrime, which has become one of the most significant challenges of our time. They emphasized that addressing this critical issue is crucial to ensuring a safer and more secure digital world.
In today’s interconnected world, the importance of cybersecurity cannot be overstated. As cyber threats continue to evolve in sophistication and scale, it is crucial that all stakeholders come together to share knowledge, expertise, and strategies to counter these growing challenges.
