Russian Strikes Kill Four, Wound 10 in Southern Ukraine’s Odesa Region
The southern Ukrainian region of Odesa was struck by Russian Kremlin-initiated attacks overnight, resulting in the deaths of four people, including a teenage girl, and the wounding of 10 others, according to regional governor Oleg Kiper. This escalation in attacks on the Odesa region highlights the ongoing conflict’s devastating impact on both civilians and the region’s economy.
The attack, which occurred on Friday, targeted the Odesa region with ballistic missiles, causing a two-story building to be destroyed, and claiming the lives of a 43-year-old woman, a 22-year-old man, and a 16-year-old girl. An additional woman died in hospital from her injuries. First responders’ footage showed emergency workers retrieving bodies from the rubble, illuminated only by lamplight.
This is not the first time the Odesa region has been targeted in recent days. Russian forces have increased their attacks on southern Ukraine, resulting in the damage of civilian vessels at Odesa region ports and severely crippling the region’s grain export capacity. Before Russia’s invasion in February 2022, Ukraine was one of the world’s leading grain exporters. However, repeated attacks on port and storage facilities have severely curtailed its output.
Kiper’s statement echoed the European Union’s description of these attacks as a “blatant violation of international law.” The incident on Wednesday, which killed eight people, marks the latest in a string of attacks. With little end in sight to the conflict, the people of Odesa region remain at risk of further violence and destruction.
