Cuban musician Jose Manuel Carbajal Zaldivar, popularly known as “El Taiger,” passed away on Thursday in Miami at the age of 37, following a week-long hospitalization after being shot in the head. His family confirmed the news.

El Taiger was a renowned “urbano” artist who blended reggaeton with traditional Cuban music, known for hits such as “La Historia,” “Papelito,” and “Habla Matador.” The Cuban Institute of Music paid tribute to him on Facebook, stating, “We bid farewell to one of the most recognized figures of the urban genre, who did not renounce his Cuban identity and always expressed love for his country.”

Based in the United States for several years, Carbajal Zaldivar was found unconscious in a car in Miami on October 3. The Miami police are currently investigating the shooting. His family expressed gratitude to his medical team and to those who offered prayers and tributes during his hospitalization. “Turn up the volume of your music, dance, and celebrate his life,” they added in a social media statement.

In Havana, Cubans honored El Taiger’s memory on October 10, 2024, with a tribute that included holding pictures, lighting candles, and singing his songs. Legendary Cuban band Los Van Van mourned his loss on Instagram, saying, “We are deeply saddened by your death but proud to have known you and shared the stage with you. Rest in peace, tireless warrior.”

In the Guanabacoa neighborhood of eastern Havana, scores of people gathered in a park to say their final goodbyes. In front of an old church, they placed photos of the musician, lit candles, and turned on the lights of their cell phones in tribute. Yuli Mauro, 30, danced to his music with her son and shared, “We are sad, very sad, but we are celebrating as he wanted. He said he wanted parties and joy. We’ve already lit his candle so that he can reach heaven with light.”
