Nigeria’s Fuel Price Hike: Labour Party Candidate, Peter Obi, Calls for Reverse of Unfair Increase
The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has lambasted the sudden hike in the pump price of fuel by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), describing it as “insensitive and unfortunate.” In a social media post, Obi expressed his concern that the price hike would have a devastating impact on Nigeria’s economic survival. According to him, the increase is a result of the Federal Government’s wrong policy choices and the NNPCL’s lack of transparency.
Obi noted that the NNPCL has raised the price of fuel (PMS) without providing any explanation, leaving the public in the dark about the reasoning behind the decision. He emphasized that such actions are “neither sound economics nor necessary compassion” and are a clear indication of the government’s failure to prioritize the welfare of the people.
The former governor also questioned the roles and responsibilities of the NNPCL and regulatory agencies, highlighting the growing confusion surrounding their responsibilities. He called on the Honourable Minister of Petroleum Resources/President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to provide a full explanation, offer alternative options, and reverse the sudden price hike, citing the need to act in the best interest of the majority of Nigerians.
Obi’s plea for a reversal of the fuel price hike comes as the country grapples with unprecedented economic hardship, and his call has sent a strong message that the government must take immediate action to address the plight of the people. As he put it, a new and more compassionate Nigeria is indeed possible, and it begins with the people’s welfare being prioritized.
