Nigeria’s Super Eagles Earn Relief in 1-0 Win Against Libya

Uyo, Nigeria – The Nigeria Super Eagles, led by Coach Augustine Eguavoen, have finally found some relief in their 2025 AFCON Qualifiers campaign, securing a 1-0 win against the Mediterranean Knights of Libya. The lone goal, scored by Dele Bashiru in the 87th minute of the second half, brought a mix of emotions for Eguavoen and his players.

Speaking at the post-match briefing at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Eguavoen acknowledged that the game could have gone either way, but praised the team’s efforts in the second half. “Emotions were high, and when the goal came, it was a huge relief. Actually, we should have scored more goals, but the tactics that they deployed was compact, as they defended in numbers when the ball was in their area,” he said.

The Super Eagles coach disclosed that his team was slow in the first half, but improved in the second half with better ball circulation. However, he lamented that the team’s inability to score more goals was due to the Mediterranean Knights’ defensive tactics.

Despite the win, Eguavoen assured that his team will not take their foot off the pedal, promising to restrategize and put up a more formidable team for the return match in Libya on Tuesday. “We will restrategize and make sure we have a more clinical approach to the match in Lybia,” he said.

Super Eagles Captain, William Ekong, also speaking at the press conference, assured fans that the team is on track to qualify for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco. “We will qualify for the tournament, and we will ensure that our approach to the match in Lybia is more clinical,” he said.

The win has put the Super Eagles at the top of Group D, with seven points, ahead of their next match against the Mediterranean Knights in Libya.
