Funerals Planned for General Abbas Nilforoushan, Killed in Israeli Air Strike
In a grim display of mourning, both Iran and Iraq will pay their respects to the life of General Abbas Nilforoushan, the revolutionary who lost his life in an Israeli air strike in early September. The 25-year-old commander, part of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Quds Force, was killed alongside Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah in a strike on southern Beirut.
The news agency Sepah reported that Nilforoushan’s body was recovered from the site of the strike on Friday, and funeral ceremonies are scheduled to begin on Monday in the Iraqi cities of Najaf and Karbala. The body will then be transferred to Iran’s holy city of Mashhad, where another ceremony will take place on Tuesday. Finally, Nilforoushan will be laid to rest on Thursday in his hometown of Isfahan.
This funeral procession comes a month after Iran launched a barrage of some 200 missiles at Israel in retaliation for the killing of Nilforoushan, Nasrallah, and Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh in late July. The strike marked a significant escalation in the conflict between the two countries, with Israel vowing to retaliate for the attack. Defence Minister Yoav Gallant has promised a “deadly, precise, and surprising” response.
As tensions between Israel and Iran continue to rise, the funerals of General Nilforoushan and his comrades serve as a poignant reminder of the high stakes in this ongoing conflict.
