Netanyahu Calls for UN Peacekeepers in South Lebanon to be Removed from Harm’s Way
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has made a stern appeal to the United Nations chief, Antonio Guterres, to urgently withdraw peacekeepers deployed in south Lebanon from harm’s way. Citing the recent injuries to five UN peacekeepers, Netanyahu alleged that Hezbollah is using the peacekeepers as human shields, putting both their lives and those of Israeli soldiers at risk.
In a video statement, Netanyahu emphasized that Israeli forces have repeatedly asked the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) to leave the border area, but their refusals have provided a human shield to Hezbollah terrorists. “Your refusal to evacuate the UNIFIL soldiers makes them hostages of Hezbollah. This endangers both them and the lives of our soldiers,” Netanyahu said.
The Israeli Prime Minister’s appeal comes a day after the UNIFIL refused to withdraw from the border area despite the recent injuries to its peacekeepers. Netanyahu regretted the harm to the UNIFIL soldiers and reiterated Israel’s commitment to preventing further harm, stating that the simplest and most effective way to ensure this is to have the peacekeepers withdraw from the danger zone.
The situation highlights the complex and delicate balance of power in the region, with tensions running high between Israel, Hezbollah, and the UN peacekeeping force. The international community is closely monitoring the situation, with global leaders weighing in on the issue. As the situation unfolds, the world waits with bated breath for a resolution that prioritizes peace, security, and the safety of all parties involved.
