Nigeria: Former President Obasanjo Calls for Judicious Use of Abundant Resources to Develop the Nation

In a recent address at the Methodist Archdiocese of Abuja’s 40th anniversary celebration, former President Olusegun Obasanjo emphasized the importance of appreciating God’s blessings and called on Nigerian leaders to judiciously use the country’s abundant resources to develop the nation.

Nigeria, Obasanjo noted, has been blessed with numerous resources, including the Rivers Niger and Benue, crude oil, fertile soil, and other natural resources, making it a country that should thrive. However, he lamented that the country’s current situation is not God’s fault, but rather a result of the nation’s failure to use its resources wisely.

“The Bible says God created other nations and gave them resources. He has similarly blessed Nigeria with numerous resources for growth. We have been given everything we need; it’s our duty to appreciate God, especially since many countries lack what Nigeria has,” Obasanjo said.

He urged leaders, clergy, and citizens to pray for the country’s healing, acknowledging that Nigeria’s current situation is not God’s fault. “We’ve squandered God’s gifts, but if we humble ourselves and seek Him, He will heal our land,” he stated.

In his goodwill message, President Bola Tinubu, represented by Mr. Nyesom Wike, commended the Methodist Church Nigeria for its commitment to social justice, education, and humanitarian outreach. He praised the church’s peace and unity promotion, urging continued dedication.

The event also saw the honors of notable figures with the Knights of John Wesley award, including Obasanjo, Gowon, Tinubu, and his wife, Oluremi Tinubu, Goodluck Jonathan, George Akume, and Godswill Akpabio.

The call to action by Obasanjo and other leaders to develop the nation through the judicious use of its abundant resources is a timely one, given the country’s current challenges. As Nigeria navigates its way out of the present situation, it is essential to recognize and appreciate God’s blessings and work together to build a brighter future for all.
