Fayose Expresses Regret Over PDP Crisis, Predicts Miracle for Party Rebirth
Ajo Fayose, a former governor of Ekiti State and a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has expressed deep regret over the ongoing crisis rocking the party. In a recent interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Fayose lamented that the suspension and counter-suspension within the party has brought it to an embarrassing level, equivalent to a “mockery.”
According to Fayose, the crisis is a result of the party’s loss in the 2023 general election to the All Progressives Congress (APC). He believes that divine intervention is needed for the PDP to recover and become a strong, capable opposition party. “The mismanagement and arrogance of a few today is haunting the party, and so, it will need God’s intervention, it will need a miracle for this party to be put together again,” he said.
The situation has become particularly challenging with the Federal High Court in Abuja banning the PDP National Executive Committee (NEC) from removing Umar Damagum as the Acting National Chairman of the party. Fayose believes that this has tied the hands of everyone in the party, making it difficult for the party to move forward.
In a related development, Fayose has dismissed reports that he has expressed interest in becoming the national chairman of the PDP, stating that the position is too hot for his age. He has also declined to seek any position in the party, saying that he no longer wants to be involved in party politics.
The crisis in the PDP has also extended to Rivers State, where Governor Siminalayi Fubara is engaged in a bitter battle for the soul of the party with his predecessor, Minister Nyesom Wike. Fayose, who had initially advised Fubara to avoid disagreements with Wike, now regrets his failure to prevent the crisis. He described the situation as “very unfortunate” and expressed fear that the case has gone beyond reconciliation.
“We all know that we were at pains to ensure that there was harmony between Fubara and Wike, but the turn of events has given us all a lot of concerns,” Fayose said. “I said all I said in good faith, all I said was to ensure there is harmony between Governor Fubara and Governor Wike, but the turn of events has given everyone a lot of concern.”
The crisis in the PDP has been ongoing for some time, with various factions within the party at loggerheads over issues of power and leadership. As the situation remains uncertain, only time will tell if the party can recover from its current state and regain its position as a major player in Nigerian politics.
