Nigeria: Former Governor Peter Obi Advocates for Professionals to Pursue Overseas Opportunities

In a recent visit to the St Charles Borromeo College of Nursing and Midwifery in Onitsha, Nigeria’s former governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, expressed his stance on the issue of professionals traveling abroad for better prospects. Speaking on Monday, Obi emphasized that restrictions on professionals leaving the country for greener pastures are unnecessary and advocated for increased investments in education and healthcare.

According to Obi, who donated to the institution, education and health are the future currencies that will drive human transactions. He noted that Nigeria has over 200 million people and urged leaders to focus on training more professionals, as foreign remittances can be a valuable revenue stream for the country. Obi also stressed the importance of diaspora remittance, which he believes is a form of revenue generation.

The former Anambra governor has been touring various institutions, donating to them and offering emotional support. In his words, “We need to invest in you, and investing in knowledge and health because it is the future. Investing in you will ensure your greatness. Your profession is lucrative, you’re being looked for all over the world.”

Obi also shared his own plans to support the college, stating, “I will be in college of nursing Anyingba tomorrow, they need my assistance to get accreditation and I will be there to support them, so that they can get it.” His commitment to the institution reflects his dedication to the education and healthcare sectors, reinforcing his central message that investing in the future of professionals is crucial for the country’s development.

Obi’s advocacy for professionals to pursue international opportunities is significant, as it highlights the need for Nigeria to prioritize education and healthcare, rather than restricting movements. By doing so, the country can harness the potential of its vast demographics, generating revenue through international remittances and fostering a more prosperous future for its citizens.
