Partial National Grid Collapse in Nigeria: TCN Responds with System Recovery Efforts

A partial collapse of Nigeria’s national grid has sparked concerns, but the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has assured that the grid is being recovered to restore power supply. According to a statement by TCN spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah, the national grid did not collapse entirely, as the Akwa Ibom generating Station was “islanded” to enable it to continue supplying power to certain areas.

“The entire system did not collapse as the IBOM Generating Station was separated to stand alone to continue supplying some areas to avoid the entire system going down,” Mbah explained. “Recovery is currently ongoing and has advanced significantly.”

The partial grid collapse saw the country plunged into darkness, with reports of widespread power outages. The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, and Eko Electricity Distribution Company all confirmed the national grid collapse, with the TCN recording zero load allocation to the 11 electricity distribution companies.

As of the time of filing this report, power supply remains patchy across various parts of the country. While the situation remains uncertain, the TCN has assured that efforts are underway to restore power supply as soon as possible.

With this report, we will continue to follow the developments and provide updates on the situation as more information becomes available. Stay tuned for further updates on this story.
