PDP Governors Call for Calm as Party Members Return to Status Quo
In a move aimed at pacifying feuding members, State governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have ordered a return to the status quo ante. The directive was issued on Tuesday morning, following a meeting of the governors that lasted into the early hours of the day.
Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, who chairs the PDP Governors’ Forum, insisted that disputes among party members are a natural part of the democratic process and can be resolved through dialogue and cooperation. "There is no crisis," he emphasized, "and we have agreed that the National Working Committee (NWC) should revert to the status quo."
According to Mohammed, the governors, the Board of Trustees (BoT), and the National Assembly caucus have all agreed to nullify the suspensions that have been in place. This decision is seen as a major step towards healing the rifts within the party and paving the way for meaningful dialogue and collaboration.
As a result of this development, Ambassador Umar Damagun will remain the acting chairman of the opposition party.
The PDP, one of Nigeria’s major political parties, has been marred by factional disputes and internal squabbles in recent times. The current initiative is seen as a clear attempt to bring about unity and stability within the party. It remains to be seen how effective this approach will be in addressing the underlying issues and restoring party cohesion.
With this new directive in place, party members are expected to put aside their differences and work towards a common goal. As the political landscape in Nigeria continues to evolve, one thing is certain – the PDP’s move towards unity and stability is a vital step towards creating a more effective and cohesive opposition.
