ECOWAS Court of Justice Elects New President and Vice President

New Leadership at the ECOWAS Court of Justice: A Fresh Start for Regional Justice

In a significant development, Honorable Justice Ricardo Claúdio Monteiro Gonçalves has been elected as the new President of the ECOWAS Court of Justice, while Honorable Justice Sengu Mohamed Koroma has taken on the role of Vice President. This new leadership duo will serve a two-year term, following an election by their colleague judges.

Gonçalves, from Cabo Verde, succeeds Hon. Justice Edward Amoako Asante, who led the Court for six years since assuming office in 2018. Koroma, from Sierra Leone, takes over from Hon. Justice Gberi-bè Ouattara, who was the out-going Vice President.

In his inaugural speech, President-elect Gonçalves outlined his vision for the Court, focusing on two key pillars: responsibility and dialogue. He emphasized the importance of upholding the institution’s mission as an independent, reliable, efficient, and accessible court. He also stressed the need for continuous dialogue with other institutions, agencies, and civil societies, while ensuring financial prudence in the administration of the institution’s fund.

The new leadership team was sworn in on October 6, 2022, in Guinea Bissau, with President Umaro Sissoco Embalo of the Conference of Heads of State and Government of the Community presiding over the ceremony. The other three judges of the Court are the out-going president, Justice Edward Amoako Asante (Ghana), the out-going vice-president, Justice Gberi-bè Ouattara (Côte d’Ivoire), and Justice Dupe Atoki (Nigeria).

This new leadership team is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the ECOWAS Court of Justice, as they work to promote regional justice and stability. With their commitment to responsibility, dialogue, and financial prudence, they are poised to make a positive impact on the region.
