University Battle: Ageism and Sexism Undermine Academic Excellence
In a shocking turn of events, a well-oiled campaign of calumny has emerged to undermine the candidacy of Aisha Sani Maikudi, the 42-year-old Acting Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja. The conspiracy, rooted in ageism and sexism, has sparked a heated debate about intellectual dishonesty and the obstacles to becoming a vice chancellor.
Maikudi’s exceptional academic and administrative accomplishments, including being a Professor of International Law, Head of Department, Deputy Dean of Faculty, Director of a key center, Deputy Vice Chancellor, and Acting Vice Chancellor, have not gone unnoticed. However, her detractors have chosen to focus on her age, arguing that she is too young to hold the position.
But is this stance backed by logic? Not quite. In the 21st century, we have seen leaders like Presidents and Prime Ministers rise to power at a relatively young age. Age, in itself, is not a factor in determining an individual’s capabilities.
Moreover, a review of the Nigerian university system reveals that many vice chancellors have been appointed with less than 10 years of experience as professors. Faruk Kuta, the incumbent Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology Minna, is a prime example. He was promoted professor in 2021 and became VC just two years later.
The hypocrisy is apparent, as the same individuals who are now criticizing Maikudi for her age overlooked several instances in the past where young academics held positions of authority. Gambo Laraba Abdullahi, for instance, was appointed VC in her forties without being a professor at the time.
As the debate rages on, it is clear that Maikudi’s detractors are scared of her intimidating CV and the potential benefits she can bring to the University of Abuja. Her world-class scholarship, vast contacts, and administrative expertise would undoubtedly elevate the institution.
The onus is on the Council to review the candidates and make informed decisions based on merit, competence, and experience. Aisha Sani Maikudi is a towering intellectual titan and proven deft administrator – let her qualifications speak for themselves.
