Nigeria’s House of Representatives Condemns Inhumane Treatment of Super Eagles by Libyan Football Federation
The Nigerian House of Representatives has strongly condemned the alleged inhumane treatment of the Super Eagles and their delegation by the Libyan Football Federation and the Libyan Government. This decision was made after a motion was adopted by Rep. Kabiru Amodu (PDP-Zamfara) at a plenary session in Abuja on Tuesday.
According to Amodu, the Super Eagles were scheduled to play a return match against the Mediterranean Knights of Libya on October 15, 2024, at the Martyrs of February Stadium in Benghazi, Libya. However, their journey was marred by a series of unfortunate events. Upon arrival at Al-Abraq International Airport in Libya on October 13, 2024, the team and their delegation were left stranded for 18 hours without access to basic amenities such as food, internet, and accommodation.
The team’s aircraft was diverted mid-flight to a small airport typically reserved for hajj operations, and they were not allowed to leave the airport or move to their hotel. This ordeal left the players fatigued and frustrated, ultimately leading them to resolve not to play the match any longer due to the hostilities by the Libyan Football Federation and the Libyan Government.
The House of Representatives has condemned the inhumane treatment and frustration of the Super Eagles and their delegation, and has mandated the Committees on Sports and Foreign Affairs to investigate the incident. The Speaker, Rep. Tajudeen Abbas, sympathized with the Super Eagles, appreciating their patriotism and expressing his disappointment at the treatment they received.
This incident highlights the importance of ensuring that international sporting events are conducted in a fair and respectful manner, with due regard for the well-being and dignity of all participants. The Nigerian House of Representatives’ condemnation of the Libyan Football Federation and the Libyan Government’s actions is a strong statement on the need for international cooperation and respect in the world of sports.
