In the early hours of Tuesday morning, a petrol tanker explosion in Majiya Town, Taura local government area of Jigawa State, Nigeria, left a trail of devastation and chaos. According to reports, at least 90 people have lost their lives, with 50 others suffering various degrees of injuries.

The disaster unfolded at around 11:30 pm on Tuesday, when the tanker driver, who was heading from Kano to Nguru in Yobe, lost control near Khadija University in Majia Town, resulting in the explosion.

Police Spokesperson, Mr. Shi’isu Adam, confirmed the tragedy in an interview with NAN on Wednesday, expressing concern that despite repeated warnings from the police to stay clear from the scene of accidents involving fuel tankers, people still gather around, putting their lives at risk. "People gathered around the accident scene, that is the reason for the mass casualty," he said.

Adam added that a mass burial of the victims would be held on Wednesday morning, while the injured were receiving medical attention at Ringim General hospital.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety and the need for greater awareness and cooperation between authorities and the public. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families during this difficult time.
