TikTok Removes Over 2.1 Million Videos in Nigeria for Violating Community Guidelines

TikTok, a popular short-form mobile video platform, has taken action to remove over 2.1 million videos in Nigeria during the second quarter of 2024, citing violations of its community guidelines. This move is part of the company’s ongoing efforts to enhance content moderation and create a safer platform for users.

According to a Community Guidelines Enforcement Report shared on Tuesday, TikTok’s proactive removal of videos resulted in a staggering 99.1% of the offending content being taken down before users even reported it. Furthermore, 90.7% of the removed videos were handled within 24 hours. These figures showcase TikTok’s commitment to staying ahead of harmful content and ensuring a safer experience for its users in Nigeria.

The affected videos represent less than 1% of the total uploads in Nigeria during the reporting period, demonstrating the platform’s effectiveness in addressing potential issues before they spread. Globally, TikTok removed over 178 million videos in June 2024, with 144 million of those removals facilitated through automated systems. This translates to a proactive detection rate of 98.2%, solidifying TikTok’s position as a leader in addressing harmful content before users encounter it.

The company reiterated its dedication to transparency and platform safety for its diverse user base in Nigeria and around the world, pledging to continue investing in technologies aimed at improving content moderation and understanding potential risks. With this commitment, TikTok aims to maintain a safe and engaging environment for its users to share their stories and connect with others.

As the platform continues to evolve, it’s clear that TikTok is working tirelessly to enhance its content moderation strategies, prioritize user safety, and maintain a strong stance against harmful or offensive content. With these efforts, the company is setting a high standard for online platforms worldwide, ensuring a safer and more enjoyable experience for its users.
