Nigeria and Benin Republic to Boost Regional Trade with New Dry Port
In a major breakthrough, Nigeria and Benin Republic have taken a significant step towards promoting regional trade and economic activities in the West African subregion. According to Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State, the Tsamiya Dry Port, located in Kebbi State, will soon commence operation, paving the way for increased trade and economic activities between the two countries and beyond.
The disclosure was made after a meeting between Governor Idris and President Patrick Talon of Benin Republic in Cotonou, as contained in a statement released on Wednesday. The meeting aimed to further actualise the opening and commencement of trade activities at the border’s Tsamiya Dry Port.
Governor Idris expressed optimism that the port would promote regional trade and enhance economic activities in the West African subregion, should it be commissioned. He highlighted the agreement between Nigeria and Benin Republic, which he described as highly beneficial to residents of towns and villages along the Sagbana-Tsamiya route.
Depute Issa Salifou, the representative of the Benin Republic government and facilitator of the project, echoed similar sentiments, stating that the project would lead to increased trade and economic activities not just between Nigeria and Benin Republic but also with Niger Republic. He expressed confidence that the project would start operating by the end of October, which would lead to improved economic well-being for those along the Sagbana-Tsamiya route.
The project’s significance lies in its potential to increase bilateral trade volumes, attract foreign investment in logistics and manufacturing sectors, and foster regional stability and collaboration. Moreover, it signals the legalisation of trade on the route, which was previously carried out illegally through smuggling since independence.
In furtherance of efforts to actualise the initiative, a trade office was commissioned in Kano by a high-powered joint team of customs officials from both countries to facilitate trade between Nigeria and Benin Republic. With the Tsamiya Dry Port set to commence operation, the region can look forward to a boost in regional trade and economic activities.
