Egypt, Spain Renew Calls for Ceasefires in Gaza, Lebanon

Egypt and Spain’s foreign ministers have renewed calls for immediate cease-fires in Gaza and Lebanon, emphasizing the need for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict. Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and his Spanish counterpart, José Manuel Albares Bueno, met in Cairo on Wednesday to discuss the escalating violence in the region.

Abdelatty expressed his deep concern over the deteriorating situation, stating that “the arrogance of power cannot achieve security and peace for any country.” He emphasized the importance of recognizing the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people and establishing a Palestinian state. “There is no security or stability in this region without the establishment of the Palestinian state,” he stressed.

Albares Bueno echoed Abdelatty’s sentiments, urging for an “immediate permanent cease-fire in Gaza and a truce in Lebanon.” He emphasized that this is a request that Spain, together with Egypt and other international partners, has been making since the outbreak of violence. The Spanish diplomat also stressed the importance of recognizing Lebanon’s sovereignty, saying, “We are talking about a sovereign state.”

Spain has been a vocal supporter of Palestinian statehood, recognizing Palestine as a State in May, along with two other European countries. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has also called on the European Union to end its free trade agreement with Israel and urged arms manufacturers to stop exporting weapons to the country.

The renewed calls for cease-fires come as the conflict in Gaza and Lebanon continues to escalate, with civilians bearing the brunt of the violence. The international community has been increasingly vocal in its demands for a peaceful resolution, with many countries calling for restraint and an end to hostilities. As the situation continues to deteriorate, the need for a unified and concerted effort to achieve peace has become more urgent than ever.

With the ongoing conflict showing no signs of abating, the joint call by Egypt and Spain’s foreign ministers for cease-fires in Gaza and Lebanon serves as a timely reminder of the need for diplomatic efforts to achieve peace. The recognition of Palestinian statehood and the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state are seen by many as crucial steps towards achieving long-term stability and security in the region.
