Media Talk Africa Exclusive: Tony O. Elumelu Advocates for Empowering Youth Entrepreneurship to Combat Climate Change in Africa
In an impassioned plea, African business leader and philanthropist Tony O. Elumelu emphasized the critical role of youth entrepreneurship in tackling climate change on the continent. As the founder of the Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF), which has empowered 20,000 entrepreneurs across 54 African countries, Elumelu highlighted the need for a multifaceted approach to unlock the full potential of green solutions in Africa.
Entrepreneurship: A Crucial Pathway to Climate Solutions
Elumelu stressed that fostering entrepreneurship, particularly among young people, is essential for achieving long-term climate solutions. By providing access to funding, mentorship, and business training, entrepreneurs can develop innovative solutions to address the continent’s most pressing challenges, including climate change.
The Tony Elumelu Foundation: A Model for Empowering Youth Entrepreneurship
Since its inception in 2010, the TEF has invested $100 million in identifying, mentoring, and funding young African entrepreneurs. The foundation’s efforts have yielded remarkable results, with over 400,000 direct and indirect jobs created and $2.3 billion in revenue generated. Moreover, 35% of the entrepreneurs empowered by the foundation work in the agricultural sector, with over 500 directly or indirectly addressing climate change-related challenges.
Partnerships and Collaboration: The Key to Unlocking Green Solutions
Elumelu emphasized that governments alone cannot address the challenges posed by climate change. He advocated for the integration of government incentive schemes with private sector opportunities, emphasizing the need for philanthropies, policymakers, and businesses to unite behind a common goal. This movement, which he termed "Africapitalism," aims to foster prosperity for all by leveraging the power of entrepreneurship.
Climate Change: A Call to Action for African Youth
As Africa warms more quickly than the rest of the world, Elumelu urged young people to take action. With an estimated 118 million Africans projected to face drought by 2030, and rising sea levels threatening coastal regions, the need for innovative solutions has never been more pressing. By harnessing the power of entrepreneurship, African youth can develop solutions that not only address climate change but also create significant economic value.
The Time for Action is Now
Elumelu’s call to action is clear: empowering youth entrepreneurship is crucial for combating climate change in Africa. As the continent’s business leaders, policymakers, and philanthropists come together to address this challenge, the time for action is now. By unleashing the potential of African entrepreneurs, we can create a more sustainable, prosperous future for all.
