Abia State Governor Employs 15 Athletes, Rewards Champions
Abia State Governor Alex Otti has made a groundbreaking move by announcing employment for 15 athletes from the state who won gold and silver medals in international and national sporting competitions. This move is a clear show of support and appreciation for the athletes’ achievements, and it promises to boost their morale and encourage them to stay in the state.
The announcement was made at the Governor’s residence in Nvosi, Isialangwa South LGA, during a reception held for Abia athletes who participated in international and national competitions. Governor Otti expressed his delight at the athletes’ success, emphasizing that it was one of his happiest days in office.
By employing the athletes, Governor Otti is breaking away from the existing embargo on employment in the state. According to him, the decision was made to prevent the athletes from seeking opportunities elsewhere, both within and outside Nigeria. "I am going to lift the embargo to employ about 15 of them," he said, reiterating his commitment to supporting the state’s athletes.
The Governor also reiterated his administration’s decision to abolish the non-indigene distinction, thereby recognizing anyone residing in Abia State as an Abian. This move promotes inclusivity and ensures equal opportunities for all residents.
In addition to the employment offer, Governor Otti announced cash rewards for the athletes, including a sum of N20 million for the two paralympic powerlifting international champions, Onyinyechi Gift Mark and Esther Nworgu. Other athletes will receive a total of N33 million, while the coaching crew will receive N22 million.
Governor Otti has also promised to address the infrastructural concerns raised by the athletes and upgrade the Office of the Director of Sports. Furthermore, a brand-new Coaster Bus will be delivered to the athletes before the end of November.
The Governor’s reception also honored former Super Eagles legend, Christian Chukwu, who was promised the best medical attention to restore his health.
This move by Governor Otti is a significant show of support for the state’s athletes, and it is likely to have a positive impact on the development of sports in Abia State.
