Nigeria Takes Major Step Towards Cleaner Energy with CNG Adoption Initiative

In a bid to accelerate the adoption of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as a cleaner and affordable fuel alternative, the NNPC Retail Limited (NRL) has sensitised over 1,000 auto mechanics on the process of converting gasoline-powered vehicles to CNG. The comprehensive awareness initiative, held at the National Artisans and Technicians Conference in Lagos, is part of NNPC’s efforts to promote sustainable energy solutions in Nigeria.

According to Baba Kukawa, Executive Director of Retail Operations and Mobility at NRL, CNG is a growing trend that will shape the future of Nigeria’s automotive industry. Kukawa emphasized the importance of CNG adoption in achieving Nigeria’s long-term energy goals, stating, “We believe that sensitizing mechanics on the importance of CNG adoption is critical to achieving Nigeria’s long-term energy goals.” He also encouraged artisans to pursue the necessary skills to contribute to the shift towards cleaner and more affordable fuel options.

The initiative featured practical demonstrations on the technicalities of converting vehicles from gasoline to CNG, providing mechanics with first-hand insights into the process. Additionally, the NRL promoted its Oleum lubricant range, which is known for its excellent performance in both gasoline and CNG-powered vehicles.

The NNPC Ltd.’s commitment to promoting CNG as an alternative fuel aligns with its broader strategic vision to reduce the environmental impact of Nigeria’s energy consumption while making fuel more affordable for consumers. The company also provided auto mechanics with coveralls, toolboxes, and generators during the event to enhance their business operations and promote sustainability.

Responding to the initiative, the chairmen of the Motor Mechanics and Technicians Association of Nigeria and the Nigerian Automobile Technicians Association commended the NRL for its proactive approach. They called for the expansion of the initiative to include more mechanics and technicians nationwide, highlighting the importance of sustained efforts to support Nigeria’s move towards cleaner energy solutions.

The NNPC’s initiative represents a crucial step towards advancing Nigeria’s transition to a cleaner and more sustainable energy future. As the country continues to navigate its energy challenges, the adoption of CNG as a cleaner and affordable fuel alternative is a significant step in the right direction. With the support of key stakeholders and the commitment of companies like NNPC, Nigeria is poised to make meaningful progress towards a more sustainable energy future.
