Ruling Party APC Secures Landslide Victory in Kogi State Council Elections

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has achieved a remarkable feat in the recent council elections in Nigeria’s Kogi state, winning all 21 local government chairmanship positions. In addition, the party secured victories in all 239 councillorship seats across the state.

Mamman Nda-Eri, the chairperson of the Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission (KOSIEC), officially announced the election results on Saturday, describing the electoral process as “peaceful, free, and fair”. According to Nda-Eri, “APC performed excellently; it cleared all the chairmanship and councillorship positions, leaving nothing to the other 18 political parties that took part in the election.”

Prior to the official announcement, the results had been declared at various collation centers by the respective returning officers. Nda-Eri expressed his gratitude to election officials, security personnel, observers, and journalists for their role in ensuring the election’s success.

As the newly elected officials prepare to take office, Nda-Eri urged them to be gracious in their victories. This is particularly significant given the supreme court’s judgement granting local governments financial autonomy. By being magnanimous, the winners will be able to justify this decision and effectively exercise their newly bestowed powers.

In a final statement, Nda-Eri extended his appreciation to all individuals who contributed to the successful conduct of the elections. The APC’s comprehensive victory has undoubtedly set the tone for future elections in the region, leaving many to wonder how other parties will respond to this resounding defeat.
