Tensions Rise in Nigerian Politics as Bashir Ahmad Criticizes Peter Obi’s Handling of Supporters

A recent statement from Bashir Ahmad, a former media aide to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, has sparked controversy in the Nigerian political scene. On Sunday, Ahmad expressed his concerns about the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, stating that he has no place in political discourse if he cannot control his harsh and toxic supporters.

Ahmad’s comments come after Obi congratulated former Head of State, Yakubu Gowon, on his birthday, and subsequently explained his decision to do so. According to Ahmad, Obi’s need to justify his actions is unnecessary, especially considering Gowon’s respected status in Nigeria’s history.

Obi, however, explained that his intention was to showcase the importance of forgiveness and moving forward, even in the face of adversity. He stated that he congratulated Gowon to demonstrate the ultimate heroism of forgiving one’s enemies and progressing towards a better future.

In an X post, Ahmad emphasized his concerns, stating, "If Peter Obi cannot control his harsh and toxic supporters, then he has no business or a place in meaningful political discourse." He also questioned why Obi felt the need to justify his decision to congratulate Gowon, a respected elder statesman in Nigeria.

Ahmad stressed that as an aspiring leader, Obi and his supporters must understand the importance of unity and respect for Nigeria’s history and its figures. He firmly believes that without embracing the oneness of the country, neither Obi nor his supporters have a place in meaningful political discourse.

This development highlights the complexities and challenges of Nigeria’s political landscape, where leaders must navigate delicate relationships and competing interests. As the country continues to evolve and grow, it remains to be seen how Obi and other political figures will address these concerns and work towards a more united and prosperous future for all Nigerians.
