Media Talk Africa Exclusive Interview: BRELAND Unveils His Inspiring Journey, Exploring Music, Freedom, and Humanity

Renowned artist BRELAND has embarked on an extraordinary journey since the launch of his debut album "Cross Country" in 2022. With a dynamic interpretation of country music, he not only reflected the evolving landscape of the genre but also positioned himself as a trailblazer. After a relentless touring schedule, numerous accolades, and collaborations with top figures in country music, BRELAND felt it was time to pause and reflect on his future direction.

In an exclusive interview with Media Talk Africa, BRELAND shared his journey to Selma, Alabama, a place that holds deep familial roots. This experience eventually led to the creation of a new EP, "Project 2024." Inspired by his mother’s similar trip the previous year, BRELAND found himself drawn to a place that, despite being a vibrant symbol of hope and resilience, was largely overlooked by the world.

"Selma is often viewed as a vibrant symbol of hope, freedom, and the resilience of the American and African American communities," BRELAND remarks. "Yet, it is also a town that many have largely overlooked."

During his visit, BRELAND witnessed the devastating aftermath of a tornado that struck the area last year, leaving many storefronts from the 1960s standing empty. He notes that the town is "essentially a food desert," with the closest hospital located 30 miles away. This experience profoundly affected BRELAND, who realized that he could easily have grown up in such an environment, acknowledging that "historically, these are my people."

BRELAND’s experience in Selma underscored his desire to create music that highlights the town’s untold stories and to craft songs that convey authentic narratives. This is evident in his collaboration with The War & Treaty on the track "Same Work," which he characterizes as the most traditional country song on the EP.

The lyrics of "Same Work" recount a poignant encounter from a meet and greet with a fan, a veteran turned nurse who provides free healthcare to others. This narrative resonated deeply with BRELAND, serving as the emotional core of the six-track EP and concluding with a reminder of humanity’s capacity for goodness.

Regarding the title "Project 2024," BRELAND clarifies that it is unrelated to Project 2025, a document advocating for a significant shift in American governance and society. Instead, he explains, the title is more of a creative initiative, making a statement about the importance of not taking certain freedoms for granted. According to BRELAND, "In the most straightforward terms, this is the sole project I will release in 2024. You can interpret it in that context."

When asked about the potential for the title to be perceived as provocative, BRELAND adds, "Perhaps that will encourage people to engage with it, whether positively or negatively. However, I do not believe any of the songs in this project carry political themes." He emphasizes that his presence as a vocal young Black man may have political implications, but his goal is to ensure that the music remains accessible to everyone.

"Project 2024" indeed transcends geographical boundaries, fostering human connections at every opportunity. BRELAND achieved this by continuing his genre-blending approach, incorporating elements of Afrobeat in "Motion" and Southern gospel influences in "Icing." With this EP, BRELAND cements his position as a boundary-pushing artist, using his music as a powerful tool to spread love, hope, and freedom.

As Media Talk Africa continues to follow BRELAND’s journey, we look forward to the impact that "Project 2024" will have on his fans and the world at large.
