Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory Minister Orders Demolition of Illegal Structures
In a move to crackdown on unapproved development, Nigeria’s Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has ordered the immediate demolition of illegal structures at the Sabon Lugbe South District Layout in Abuja. The Minister’s directive was issued on Tuesday during an unscheduled visit to the site, where he was accompanied by the heads of various security agencies in the FCT.
Wike emphasized that buildings without proper documentation from the FCT Administration would be torn down, describing the developers as "land grabbers." He noted that the structures were built without the approval of the Development Control Department, in clear violation of the FCT’s land use provisions.
Upon inspection, the Minister expressed his dissatisfaction with the developers, stating, "You can see they are all land grabbers without documents, and we are not going to allow that." This stance underscores the government’s commitment to upholding the law and maintaining order in the capital city.
To facilitate the demolition process, Wike directed the Director of the Department of Development Control, Town Planner Mukhtar Galadima, to work closely with the various security agencies. The Minister also warned that security personnel would arrest anyone who obstructs the demolition exercise, ensuring that the operation is carried out smoothly and efficiently.
The demolition of these illegal structures marks a significant step towards restoring order and promoting sustainable development in the Federal Capital Territory. As the government continues to enforce its regulations, it is clear that unapproved development will no longer be tolerated, and those who flout the law will face the consequences.
